Back in 2013, Linburg made the leap from handwritten fuel records to a Merridale Auditor GX management system, coupled with Merridale’s FuelWorks web-based software. The upgrade transformed their operations across depots in Sheffield, Derby and Nottingham, replacing time-consuming manual logging with accurate, automatic reporting accessible from any connected device.
At the time, company director John Hadaway praised the system’s simplicity:
“Initially, the thought of moving to FuelWorks was almost intimidating, but I quickly found it simple to use and navigate. It’s so easy!”

“I can’t think of a time I’ve looked at our reports and wished FuelWorks could tell me something more. It covers everything.”

That usability has stood the test of time. Over a decade later, Linburg’s original Auditor GX installations remain fully operational — a testament to the build quality and reliability of Merridale equipment.

While Merridale’s MX range has since surpassed the GX line, Linburg’s early systems have been upgraded to integrate seamlessly into the modern network, enabling all depots — new and old — to work together through FuelWorks. This ensures that data from every site, whether operating legacy GX units or the latest MX hardware, flows securely into one central platform.

At their new Greenford depot, Linburg has installed a full suite of Merridale’s latest technology:

  • MX-T Tank Gauge – for continuous monitoring of tank levels and stock reconciliation
  • MX-M Management System – providing secure driver identification, data capture and control
  • MX-P Pump – delivering robust and precise fuelling operations

Meanwhile, at Surrey and Tamworth, Linburg has introduced MX-M management systems, providing the same control and accountability at all locations.

Each of these sites is linked via Merridale FuelWorks, creating a single, multi-site network that allows Linburg to monitor usage, analyse performance, and schedule replenishment in real time — from any device, anywhere.

FuelWorks remains the backbone of Linburg’s operation. The platform gives users complete oversight of environmental impact, fuel usage, and vehicle performance across every depot, while delivering automatic reports and alerts for low-stock conditions.

John’s verdict still stands today: “I can’t think of a time I’ve looked at our reports and wished FuelWorks could tell me something more. It covers everything.”

Linburg’s growth has been mirrored by its evolving fleet. Today, the South Yorkshire-based operator runs a modern, mixed fleet of over 40 vehicles that includes double-deck and executive coaches based at multiple depots nationwide. These high-capacity vehicles serve a wide range of clients, from corporate contracts and schools to major sports and tourism operations.

Linburg’s continued trust in Merridale reflects a partnership built on performance, reliability, and future-proof technology. From the long-serving Auditor GX to the latest MX-T, MX-M and MX-P systems, Merridale’s products have evolved — but the company’s promise of secure, simple and intelligent fuel management remains unchanged.

Parrys International Upgrade & Renew Rather Than Replace https://merridale.co.uk/bus-coach/parrys-international-upgrade/ Tue, 14 May 2024 14:18:52 +0000 https://fuelmanagement.co.uk/?p=2727 The multi-award-winning company first began operating in 1973 and have become well known worldwide for being the long-standing principal sponsor of their hometown speedway team, the Parrys International Wolverhampton Wolves. Their first Merridale pump was installed as far back as 1997, with the current pump being fitted in 2012 and still operating reliably today. With the Black Country based coach operator remaining satisfied with their Merridale pump, they recently chose to upgrade the current system rather than replace it to include Merridale’s newest reporting software, FuelWorks.

We’ve had our Merridale pump for a fair few years and never had a problem with it. It still runs perfectly now, so I was hesitant to replace it when we decided we needed to have reporting software too. Thankfully, Merridale have been able to upgrade our existing kit to enable it to run the FuelWorks software.

James Parry of Parrys International said “It is so much easier to monitor the fleet and fuel now. We don’t have to rely on anyone’s handwritten notes anymore, we can see accurate reports and stock levels almost instantly. We are a lot less panicked these days now that we get alerts when the fuel levels might be getting low, and I’ve given login details to a few of the staff, so everyone is always in the know of what needs ordering and when.”

FuelWorks has become increasingly popular with Merridale’s current customers. Due to its ability to be accessed through a web browser on any device, FuelWorks gives the user complete flexibility and accessibility, eliminating the need for the software to be installed on a limited number of nominated devices. As well as FuelWorks, Merridale also offer other great packages to suit businesses who prefer to work on a closed network basis or only require access on certain computers.

Fleet operators who wish to upgrade existing Merridale equipment to use FuelWorks need not worry about replacing hardware to do so. Merridale can upgrade most existing systems to make them compatible with FuelWorks, no matter how old the system is.

Since 1994, Merridale has been producing built-to-order products using only the best, tried, and tested components. With all Merridale products designed in-house to achieve a minimum life of 10 years and meet strict ATEX standards, there is no compromise on build quality. The housing units on Merridale’s products are designed to ensure that internal components are easily accessible for maintenance and repair, as well as being easy to update rather than having to replace the whole system.

The software has been designed in-house by Merridale to be as user-friendly as possible, without sacrificing any functionality. Merridale also offers unrivaled levels of support and training, with initial training being available remotely, and a help desk on hand to offer ongoing support.

“We needed very little help and next to no training at all to get going! Everything about the software is pretty easy to use and self-explanatory. Following a quick call with the helpdesk, we knew exactly how to do what we needed to do and had everything setup and ready to use. FuelWorks is straight to the point and simple enough for anyone to get along with.”

FuelWorks allows multiple users to report on and monitor their environmental impact, fuel usage, costs and vehicle performance across multiple sites or tanks. It also has the capability to monitor tank levels and predict low stock, with email alerts being sent in such events.

Eco-concious Coach Operator Trusts Merridale for Their Environmental Reporting https://merridale.co.uk/bus-coach/eco-concious-coach-operator-trusts-merridale-environmental-reporting/ Thu, 28 Mar 2024 13:42:58 +0000 https://fuelmanagement.co.uk/?p=2708 Maynes Coaches, of Buckie in Scotland, make it no secret that they are committed to reducing their carbon footprint at every opportunity and hold themselves to exceptional standards. As well as winning multiple nationwide awards, they have also been named one of only 18 companies to attain DVSA Earned Recognition accreditation.

“We constantly strive to do our best for the environment and all of our business decisions are made consciously, for example, our uniforms are now made using recycled plastic. Being a coach operator, our fuel usage is naturally one of our biggest concerns. This is why we chose to replace our outdated third-party fuel pump with the full Merridale system” explained a Maynes representative.

As part of the upgrade, which included a Merridale MX-I heavy-duty fuel pump with an integrated fuel management system, and the MX-T tank management system, Horsleys now use Merridale’s FuelWorks software to monitor their fleet of over 45 coaches.

Merridale’s web-based FuelWorks reporting software is the software of choice when it comes to gathering, managing and reporting accurate fuelling data to fleet operators in the UK. With FuelWorks being accessible through any standard web browser, the flexibility and accessibility enjoyed by the end user is enhanced. There is no need for software to be installed onto office computers and the customer can avoid extensive training, security, and backup issues.

We constantly strive to do our best for the environment and all of our business decisions are made consciously, for example, our uniforms are now made using recycled plastic. Being a coach operator, our fuel usage is naturally one of our biggest concerns. This is why we chose to replace our outdated third-party fuel pump with the full Merridale system.

With the software being securely hosted by Merridale and accessible online using a dedicated username and password, there is often no requirement for IT departments to be involved in the setup. Customers also like the ability to access their fuel management software on their mobile phones and tablets without having to install an app or programme, ideal if they are offsite and need to make a quick amendment or check some data.

Because Merridale’s FuelWorks software has been designed and developed in-house by Merridale, it is often updated and improved to ensure that customers can rely on a current and capable service. Through listening to customer requirements, Merridale have implemented a number of key features to help make the fuel management reporting process easier for the end user.

For example, Merridale have a number of customers who are FORS members and who are required to produce specific environmental impact information across their vehicle fleet as part of their membership. Merridale have developed their software with the ability to automatically produce, schedule and email these necessary reports to anyone that needs them, including exception reports to help identify rogue performing vehicles.

With scheduled reporting, users no longer have to access the software to run reports every time they need them. Merridale will work with the customer during setup to ensure the correct settings and parameters are present within the software. From there, the customer can add any user with an email address to automatically receive a report weekly, monthly or however often they need the information.

For any fleet operators considering fuel management systems or an upgrade to their current installations, Merridale’s sales team are happy to discuss any requirements and arrange a demonstration of the web-based software using Microsoft Teams. This gives potential users the opportunity to view the software, see the capabilities and understand how the technology could help to improve their fuel control process.

For existing Merridale fuel management users, Merridale can upgrade most existing systems to make them compatible with FuelWorks, no matter how old the system is. This means they can be online and taking advantage of the latest web-based reporting software sooner than they think, without having to shell out on costly replacements.

Copelands Tours Make the Switch to Merridale https://merridale.co.uk/bus-coach/copelands-tours-make-the-switch-to-merridale/ Wed, 20 Dec 2023 13:46:16 +0000 https://fuelmanagement.co.uk/?p=2674 Copelands Tours, who are one of the largest coach operators in North Staffordshire, invested in a Merridale MX-I complete fuel management package after losing confidence with their existing pump. With a fleet of 28 coaches refilling around 38,000 liters of diesel a month, they needed a replacement they could rely on.

Howard Jones of Copelands said, “We only had our last system for about 5 years before it started going wrong. We hadn’t been overwhelmed by it anyway but when the actual pump packed in, we knew we needed something else. Merridale stood out to us as the frontrunner and our experience with them has been excellent. Installation was so much quicker and easier than I imagined.”

Switching to Merridale also opened us up to reporting which we’d never had before. We’ve only had the software for a month so far, so I’ve not had the full FuelWorks experience yet but it’s ticking all the boxes. The previous system was a simple fuel dispenser without any reporting capabilities at all, so now we can not only see who’s used the pump and when but also vital data such as stock levels and mpgs which is brilliant.

Built to be the complete solution in commercial fuelling and designed to meet strict ATEX standards, the Merridale MX-I integrates the intelligence and control of Merridale’s MX-M fuel management system with the reliable performance of the Merridale MX-P pump in a single cabinet. Having both systems in one robust unit makes it an ideal and cost-effective solution for fleet operators with limited space.

A driver for Copelands, who regularly uses the pump to refuel, said “Without putting the previous system down, you can really tell the difference in quality with the Merridale kit. It feels much more robust and capable of heavy usage. For example, the MX-I has a sturdy metal keypad that you can actually feel working, the old system had a very temperamental touch pad that was horrible to use with gloves on.”

The integrated fuel management system gives fleet operators the benefit of using Merridale’s FuelWorks web-based software to measure fuel usage, vehicle performance, driver efficiency and environmental impact.

Howard also said “Switching to Merridale also opened us up to reporting which we’d never had before. We’ve only had the software for a month so far, so I’ve not had the full FuelWorks experience yet but it’s ticking all the boxes. The previous system was a simple fuel dispenser without any reporting capabilities at all, so now we can not only see who’s used the pump and when but also vital data such as stock levels and mpgs which is brilliant.”

Merridale FuelWorks is the choice of many large fleet operators and local authorities, with over 1400 sites already in the UK. Each week more fleet operators switch to Merridale FuelWorks, taking advantage of this low-cost subscription-based service, securely hosted by Merridale.

The ability of Merridale FuelWorks to be accessed through a web browser on any device gives the user complete flexibility and accessibility, eliminating the need for any software to be installed on office computers. This means that users can access the vital data they require, from anywhere, at any time. Merridale FuelWorks can also monitor tank levels and predict low stock, sending email alerts as needed.

The software has been designed in-house by Merridale to be as user-friendly as possible, without sacrificing any functionality. Merridale also offers unrivalled levels of support and training, with initial training being available remotely, and a help desk on hand to offer ongoing support.

Other features include secure encrypted HTTPS connections, multiple users across multiple sites, real-time capabilities, a range of reporting features (including fuel, cost, vehicle and driver performance, and environmental impact), tank stock reconciliation and costing, stock low prediction and email alerts.

Fleet operators who wish to upgrade existing Merridale equipment to use FuelWorks need not worry about replacing existing hardware to do so. Merridale can upgrade most existing systems to make them compatible with FuelWorks, no matter how old the system is.

Applegates celebrate 15 years of Merridale reliability and service https://merridale.co.uk/bus-coach/15-years-merridale-reliability-service/ Wed, 20 Dec 2023 12:12:59 +0000 https://fuelmanagement.co.uk/?p=2656 “We’ve had our Merridale system since 2008 and I can think of only two occasions when it has failed in some way. Merridale had it back up and running both times within a day. I cannot fault the system or service at all and until I have no other choice, I have no desire to get rid of it.” exclaimed Applegates managing director, Ceri Taylor.

Applegates celebrate 15 years of Merridale reliability and serviceThe Newport based business, which has been operating day trips and European tours since it was established by Frank Applegate in 1967, first invested in their Merridale system 15 years ago when they installed a Merridale Auditor GS pump with built-in management system and Merridale’s Fuel FX reporting software. These same systems have remained in place ever since, with the help of regular inspections and services.

With all Merridale products designed in-house to achieve a minimum life of 10 years, there is no compromise on build quality. The housing units on Merridale’s products are designed to ensure that internal components are easily accessible for maintenance and repair, as well as being easy to upgrade rather than having to replace the whole system.

In fact, Applegates Coaches have recently had an upgrade to their 2008 system, so that it now monitors and controls their Adblue pump whilst still utilising the same vehicle identifiers and software.

For several years Merridale have offered comprehensive inspection and calibration services. The full inspection is under constant review to ensure that it continues to meet fully the needs of the marketplace and can form part of your annual DSEAR report and full site risk assessment.

This service has been expanded over the years to cope with the increased demand and is now carried out by a dedicated team, fully trained and equipped to complete these inspections quickly and efficiently. For each inspection, customers will receive a detailed multipoint inspection document detailing the results of the inspection, including any readjustments to meters and identifying where improvements are needed or recommended. This report can also include observations regarding the general condition of your tank and gauging equipment.

Merridale Inspection and calibration services can be purchased in a few ways. This can include purchase on an ad-hoc basis, on a programmed basis, or as an add-on to the extended warranty scheme offered by Merridale.  For the latter option, discounts will apply which includes no application of traveling time and costs.

Bland’s reaping the benefits of going digital https://merridale.co.uk/bus-coach/blands-reaping-the-benefits-of-going-digital/ Mon, 30 Oct 2023 11:13:45 +0000 https://fuelmanagement.co.uk/?p=2640 Bland’s, who have depots in Stamford, Rutland, and Peterborough, have been using Merridale’s equipment and software since upgrading their systems in April 2023. Before this, they did all their refuelling off-site and relied on receipts and handwritten notes for their reporting.

“We didn’t have any on-site fuelling before having our Merridale system installed. All our vehicles were refuelled out on the road at the most convenient places, which meant prices were usually at their highest and reporting was near impossible. We had receipts, invoices, and spreadsheets all over the place. Things are just so much simpler now and the benefits from buying your fuel in bulk are a bonus too!” explained managing director Adam Barrett.

The upgrade included a new 45,000-litre tank fitted with a Merridale MX-I fuel pump with built-in fuel management system, a Merridale MX-T tank management system, and Merridale’s web-based software FuelWorks. With this, users can access data from any device connected to the internet and export reports as spreadsheets if required.

FuelWorks has become increasingly popular within the commercial fuelling sector. Due to its ability to be accessed through a web browser on any device, FuelWorks gives the user complete flexibility and accessibility, eliminating the need for the software to be installed on a limited number of nominated devices.

When asked about Bland’s transition to FuelWorks, Adam said “Going from nothing to having the full works seemed slightly daunting at first but the transition was barely noticeable. I was expecting a few teething problems but the whole system has been very reliable and FuelWorks is easy to work with, which helps a lot.”

FuelWorks allows multiple users to report on and monitor their environmental impact, fuel usage, costs, and vehicle performance across multiple sites or tanks. It can also monitor tank levels and predict low stock, with email alerts being sent in such events.

“We’ve had our Merridale system since 2009 and it still works perfectly! We even chose to get Merridale to move it for us when we changed our depot location, rather than replace the system as it would have been a waste. There is absolutely nothing wrong with it.” exclaimed Eurocoaches managing director, Keith Sanzo.

"Every time I go to a trade show, somebody tries to sell me a new system, but I'm not interested. With our Merridale system, I’m confident that every vehicle has a key, every driver has a code, and we know exactly how each of them is performing. But most importantly for me, in over ten years it has never broken down..."

They first invested in their Merridale system over ten years ago, when they installed a Merridale Auditor GS pump & management system and a Merridale FT tank management system at their depot in Yate, Bristol. These same systems have remained ever since, with the help of regular inspections and services, and an upgrade from Merridale’s FuelFX software to their better-performing web-based offering, FuelWorks.

“Every time I go to a trade show, somebody tries to sell me a new system, but I'm not interested. With our Merridale system, I’m confident that every vehicle has a key, every driver has a code, and we know exactly how each of them is performing. But most importantly for me, in over ten years it has never broken down. We’ve needed the odd repair due to wear and tear, but Merridale has always sorted that out straight away.”

Tally Ho! welcome change after finding a new way to manage their fuel https://merridale.co.uk/bus-coach/tally-ho-welcome-change-after-finding-new-way-manage-fuel/ Thu, 27 Apr 2023 13:58:12 +0000 https://fuelmanagement.co.uk/?p=2522 Tally Ho!, who have been operating for nearly 100 years, offers day trips and holidays across the UK and Europe as well as serving the local people by running bus and school services. Their fleet of 60 vehicles, ranging from workshop vans to 72-seater coaches as well as the Plymouth Argyle team bus, have become an integral part of the community from their base in Kingsbridge and a depot near Ivybridge.

“We are very impressed with the MPG conversion, this used to take us hours to convert to get the correct figures but now it is done automatically and more importantly, it is done accurately.”

Tally Ho! welcome change after finding a new way to manage their fuelAfter having issues with an older system, they decided to upgrade to Merridale. “We had an existing system from another company which we would often have issues with. The MPG reports with that provider were extremely inaccurate, meaning every month somebody had to sit down and input ‘external purchases’, any fuel that was used while the pump was on free flow, and all the fuel used at our other depots. After these figures were added, we had to manually enter these details into a spreadsheet to make the necessary metric/imperial conversions to get a true mpg figure” Martin Rutherford, Operations Manager for Tally Ho!, told us.

As part of the upgrade, which included a Merridale MX-Integral pump and management system, Tally Ho! chose to use Merridale’s web-based software FuelWorks.

“We needed something user friendly and web-based, as our previous system was set up on one computer only. We found this to be very restricting and time-consuming.”

The software, which has been designed in-house by Merridale to be as easy to use as possible, without sacrificing any functionality, allows multiple users to report on and monitor their environmental impact, fuel usage, costs, and vehicle performance across multiple sites or tanks. It also has the capability to monitor tank levels and predict low stock, with email alerts being sent in such events.

“We are very impressed with the MPG conversion, this used to take us hours to convert to get the correct figures but now it is done automatically and more importantly, it is done accurately.”

Merridale also offers unrivalled levels of support and training, with initial training being available remotely, and a helpdesk on hand to offer ongoing support.

“The instructions I received were step by step and idiot-proof! After dealing with our previous systems contact, Merridale are a complete breath of fresh air. As the main user of the software, integrating the use into my routine has been easy. It saves me so much time compared to our previous system and knowing I can rely on the accuracy of the data I pull from the software makes other aspects of my job simpler. We would 100% recommend Merridale, from the first contact to the installation and to the aftersales they have been fantastic.” reiterated Martin.

Merridale returns to the Euro Bus Expo for 2022 https://merridale.co.uk/bus-coach/merridale-returns-to-the-euro-bus-expo-for-2022/ Wed, 02 Nov 2022 09:44:09 +0000 https://fuelmanagement.co.uk/?p=2423 The Euro Bus Expo returns to Birmingham's NEC this November with the largest showcase of ‘must have’ buses, coaches, mini and midi vehicles, equipment, components, and services for the sector.

For the first time since before the pandemic, Merridale are back exhibiting at this year's event to display their range of fuel management equipment and software.

In what marks their 27th year of operation, Merridale continue to be a market leader for fuel management. They have been at the forefront of quality and design since they entered the market in 1995 with the UK’s first fuel management software designed for Windows-based office computers. Their products now include storage tanks, tank management and pump systems, and a range of software.

According to sales director, Stephen Hannan, trade shows have been vital in shaping how Merridale adapt and improve their products by offering a platform for discussion between developers and fleet operators.

“Primarily we are concerned with the fleet operators’ operational requirements. We must talk directly to them to understand their priorities. By demonstrating our latest products at the Euro Bus Expo this year, we can obtain valuable feedback from potential users which can help to shape our future development and investment.

The scope of Merridale’s products has grown from basic reporting systems to sophisticated data analysis and fuel management solutions. On the hardware side, we now have a full range of depot refuelling equipment and tank management systems. Merridale’s willingness to listen to the needs of current and potential customers enables us to incorporate such features and ensure we remain the go-to fuel management solution for all fleet operators.”

If you are attending this year's Euro Bus Expo at the NEC between the 1st and 3rd of November, be sure to find Merridale on stand C62 to discuss how the range of Merridale products can benefit your company.

New systems at Elcock Reisen prove their toughness https://merridale.co.uk/bus-coach/new-systems-at-elcock-reisen-prove-their-toughness/ Wed, 10 Aug 2022 11:36:06 +0000 https://fuelmanagement.co.uk/?p=2381 Shropshire-based coach operator Elcock Reisen has recently praised the durability of Merridale’s equipment when reflecting on their first year since investing in the systems.

Since forming in 1928, Elcock Reisen has gained over 90 years of experience offering British and Continental holiday packages and day trips from their home in Telford. They regularly run trips to destinations such as The Harry Potter Studios and Portmeirion with their ever-evolving fleet of coaches and minibusses.

The equipment has had constant heavy use since the day we had it and has stood up to everything our fleet of 23 coaches, plus breakdown vans and cars, have thrown at it so far. It’s been great.

Elcock Reisen has a strong ethos of maintaining high standards and investing in the future, shown recently when they added 13 Mercedes-Benz Tourismo Access coaches to their fleet to be fully PSVAR compliant and ensure that all their trips are as accessible as possible. It was this same ethos that led to them installing a Merridale tank with built-in MX-T tank management and MX-I complete fuel management systems in place of their outdated setup.

Managing Director, Wyn Stevens, said of their reasons for upgrading their old systems “The tank and pump we previously had must have been about 40 years old and wasn’t up to the job anymore. We needed tighter security over our fuel stock as well as more accuracy when tracking MPGs, as with our old system anybody was able to access the pump and dispense as much as they wanted. We had no idea of knowing where the diesel was being used.”

Tanks purchased through Merridale come with many safety and security features, including an anti-vandal roller cabinet door to protect the built-in pump and mounted tank management system. As standard, the Merridale MX-T tank management system features a highly accurate gauge with precision pressure probes and overfill sensors, as well as having the functionality to interface with the Merridale fuel management system for remote access and detailed reconciliation.

By transferring the data to the Merridale FuelWorks web-based service, via the fuel management integration, you can benefit further from fuel stock prediction, automatic delivery detection, low-level warnings, and order prompts, all accessible on any web-enabled device.

Merridale’s MX-I is a top-of-the-line fuel pump with an integrated MX-M fuel management system, capable of controlling up to three additional pumps. They have been tested vigorously to ensure they have a high accuracy metering to 0.25% of throughput and are built to withstand rugged fleet use in harsh conditions for more than 10 years.

When asked how well the systems had performed under harsh conditions, Wyn replied “The equipment has had constant heavy use since the day we had it and has stood up to everything our fleet of 23 coaches, plus breakdown vans and cars, have thrown at it so far. It’s been great.”
