S&R Smith & Son continue to trust Merridale in fuel management upgrade
Until recently, the Essex based haulage company, who have been operating since 1949, used Merridale’s older fuel management software, FuelFX, to monitor and report on fuel usage but chose to upgrade this year following their acquisition by the Lockwood Group.
Although FuelFX is still capable of fulfilling many fleet operators’ requirements, it has since been surpassed by Merridale’s FuelWorks web-based software. Unlike FuelFX, which lead the way as the first Windows-based fuel management software in 1995, Merridale FuelWorks can be accessed from anywhere in the world using an internet connected device.
“The newer FuelWorks software is so much more accessible than its predecessor! Previously, we had a stand-alone system with restricted access but now we can allow multiple users access to data from across multiple sites.”
With this upgrade, they now use Merridale’s MX-I heavy-duty diesel pump with integrated fuel management system and a Merridale MX-T fitted to their existing tank, alongside Merridale FuelWorks.
Lee Penson of S&R Smith & Son said, “We were satisfied with our existing Merridale setup but saw this as an opportunity to renew and grow our fuel management capabilities, whilst connecting us to the larger Lockwood Group.”

“The newer FuelWorks software is so much more accessible than its predecessor! Previously, we had a stand-alone system with restricted access but now we can allow multiple users access to data from across multiple sites.”
By transferring data from the MX-I and MX-T to the Merridale FuelWorks web-based service, via the fuel management integration, S&R Smith & Son can benefit further from fuel stock prediction, automatic delivery detection, low-level warnings, and order prompts, all accessible on any web-enabled device.
Merridale FuelWorks allows fleet operators to setup multiple users across multiple sites to access unrivalled reporting features including fuel, cost, environmental impact, and vehicle and driver performance.
The software has been designed in-house by Merridale to be as user-friendly as possible, without sacrificing any functionality. Merridale also offers unrivalled levels of support and training, with initial training being available remotely, and a help desk on hand to offer ongoing support.
“Having access to such data from anywhere online has made my job a whole lot easier. We now all get the same reports instantly without it falling on one person to export and share data. It has all been simple enough to use too, we didn’t need any training.”
Fleet operators who wish to upgrade existing Merridale equipment to use FuelWorks need not worry about replacing hardware to do so. Merridale can upgrade most existing systems to make them compatible with FuelWorks, no matter how old the system is.
