Inspections and calibrations explained

At Merridale we often have fleet operators ask us ‘how many times should our fuel installation be inspected, and our pumps be calibrated?’

The default answer to this question is that fuel installations should be inspected and calibrated at least once per year. However, where equipment is subject to high throughput there might be a need to increase the frequency to twice per year or in extreme cases quarterly.

The real answer to this question is that there is not a straightforward requirement and that frequency is subject to system throughput, nature of the equipment, age of equipment, and how well the equipment is treated on a day-to-day basis.

Calibration is affected by the type of equipment employed. Pumps fitted with new high-quality positive displacement meters and with full air separation are more likely to remain within calibration and without variation for longer periods. When pumps use poorer quality or worn positive displacement meters or pumps fitted with low-cost flowmeters that do not offer air separation or positive displacement metering, there is a need to recalibrate on a far more frequent basis. The latter is also far more likely to give a wide variety of readings dependent upon wear and how fast the pump is being used to deliver fuel.

Whilst many fleet operators consider that inspection and calibration should apply to their fuel pumps, many do not realise that content gauges should also be recalibrated. It is an obligation under environmental regulations for fleet operators to complete a reconciliation chart mapping daily the amount of fuel drawn against stock depletion for potential system leaks to be quickly identified. Gauges can wear or fall out of calibration which is why they should also be checked during the inspection and calibration visit.

The full inspection is under constant review to ensure that it continues to meet fully the needs of the marketplace and can form part of your annual DSEAR report and full site risk assessment. This service has been expanded over the years to cope with the increased demand and is now carried out by a dedicated team, fully trained and equipped to complete these quickly and efficiently. For each inspection, customers will receive a detailed multipoint inspection document detailing the results of the inspection, including any readjustments to meters and identifying where improvements are needed or recommended. This report can also include observations regarding the general condition of your tank and installation.

Merridale Inspection and calibration services can be purchased in a few ways. This can include purchase on an ad-hoc basis, on a programmed basis, or as an add-on to the extended warranty scheme offered by Merridale. For the latter option, discounts will apply which includes no application of travelling time and costs.
